Lighthouse Week in Room 7 was delightful! The children and I started the week reading Keep the Lights Burning Abbie. This piece of historical fiction takes place in 1856, when Abbie Burgess takes over the lighthouse duties for her father. She encounters a terrible storm, lights the lights, cares for her family, with not one life lost. We then read Beacons of Light by Gail Gibbons. This non-fiction book about real lighthouses taught us how these lights work and what has changed over the years. Each child then wrote a non-fiction, multi-paragraph piece. I hope you enjoy our work! We are now making clay lighthouses from 3-dimentional shapes! April 2009 |

Goals The idea of a multi paragraph piece was introduced when we did our president writing. We gave it another shot with this assignment. After reading 2 books about lighthouses we brainstormed ideas for topic sentences. Each one of these ideas later became a paragraph. I was very proud of these authors. Each was willing to work hard and produce an organized piece of writing. Of course I am always looking for indenting, good spelling, proper grammar, and interesting vocabulary. Enjoy! |
